About the tank
WHAT IS HBO?
Our users sit comfortably in a pressure chamber wearing
a mask and breathing pure oxygen. Since Britain’s first chamber was set up in
Dundee in 1982 for the treatment of MS, many patients
reported significant improvements in at least one of their symptoms and a halt
to further deterioration. Since then similar improvements have been
experienced by people with ME, CP and stroke victims.
HOW DOES HBO WORK?
Our medical advisor Dr. Phillip James of the Wolfson Hyperbaric Medicine Unit believes the pure Oxygen breathed under pressure
in the chamber becomes diffused through the body at a much higher rate than
when breathed at normal pressure, thereby speeding up the
process of dispersion of the globules of fat that play the same
destructive role in MS as do the bubbles of gas in the blood
of deep sea divers.
By taking this treatment not only do many experience relief from at least one of
their symptoms but they also feel that instead of giving in to the illness they
are doing something positive to fight against it. This positive attitude is one
we try to nurture. We feel that everyone that wants treatment should receive
treatment and no one has ever been turned away because of an inability to make a
donation towards the cost of the oxygen.
HAS HBO ANY SIDE EFFECTS?
HBO is a non-invasive, non-drug therapy so side effects are
minimal. A transient tiredness is sometimes experienced after
the first few sessions, so you are advised to rest before
leaving the centre. Most "divers", as we like to call them, stay
for a chat and a tea or coffee in any case.
