SHIATSU
By Peter A. Hewitt Dip.B.S.S.., P.R.S.I.
Shiatsu Therapy Massage.

Shiatsu is a complimentary therapy which originated in Japan, the word when translated means “finger pressure.” The basis of Shiatsu comes from the ancient Chinese therapy of Anma, which developed alongside and has much in common with Acupuncture. Like many other oriental therapies it works upon the body’s life energy or Qi using the network of meridians and points to be found upon the body.

Although the literal translation of Shiatsu means “finger pressure”, during a treatment pressure may be applied by thumbs, fingers, palms, elbows, knees, or even feet. It may also include stretching of the limbs, joint rotation and soft tissue kneading.
The aim of the treatment is to regulate the flow of Qi energy within the body and bring the body into balance and therefore good health.

A Shiatsu treatment may also include vacuum cupping for chronic disorders and the application of heat by means of moxibustion (the burning of a dried herb held close to the relevant point on the meridian).

Shiatsu has been found to be beneficial to many conditions including stress, headaches, migraine, acute or chronic back pain, sciatica, muscular pain, rheumatic and some forms of arthritic pain and asthma. At the end of each treatment, the receiver is advised to rest for a few minutes, and upon rising may feel slightly light headed, or distant and for this reason it is recommended that either the treatment take place in your own home, or that a friend or relative to drive you home after the treatment.

Occasionally a new receiver may experience a healing reaction. This occurs when toxins are released during the treatment and as these are processed by the body there may be symptoms such as a headache, stiffness, or symptoms similar to a head cold. These symptoms are only temporary and should pass within twelve to twenty four hours. Drinking plenty of water and resting will help, if you experience this and are at all concerned please contact your practitioner.

At the beginning of the first treatment, a fully detailed medical history will be taken and a detailed diagnosis of the receivers condition will be made. This can take the form of questioning, touch, smell, listening and tongue diagnosis. This will enable the treatment to be tailored specifically to each individual receiver.

The treatment itself takes places at floor level, with the receiver sitting or laying on a blanket, or Japanese Futon mattress, with the receiver remaining fully clothed (lightweight natural fibers and loose fitting clothes are best).

Shiatsu is a non-intrusive therapy and no oils, or lotions are used and therefore no foreign substances are introduced into the body, which in turn could cause unwanted side effects. This means Shiatsu may be safely used on receivers of any age, or build and also during pregnancy (although during the first trimester there are certain points which may not be used).

During the treatment the practitioner generally works over the whole of the body, not just the part which may be experiencing a problem. This overall treatment will leave the receiver very relaxed and with an overall feeling of well being.

On the day of treatment there are some preparations which the receiver should make, these are as follows:

REIKI

Usui System of natural healing

What is Reiki?
Reiki is the Japanese word for Universal Life Force Energy - it is defined as being the power that acts and lives in all created matter.
Reiki is safe, natural, hands-on energy therapy which promotes and accelerates the body's own healing abilities; it operates on all levels, physical, mental and emotional.
Reiki Vitalises your life force and balances the energies in your body. This natural healing energy flows in a powerful and concentrated form through the Reiki giver; activating the body's natural ability to heal itself.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The healing energy within the body is activated and will work where ever the recipient needs it most, releasing blocked energies, cleansing the body of toxins and working to create the state of balance and well being.
Researchers in the USA have used highly sensitive instruments, which measure the flow of energy forces which enter the body, they determined that Reiki energy enters the healer through the top of the head and exists through the hands. Once the Reiki energy is activated, it seems to flow in a counter-clockwise spiral motion, much like the double helix in DNA. The energy increases during a treatment.

TREATMENTS and EFFECTS

The treatments last for approximately one hour, which is the physiological equivalent to 3 - 4 hours of sleep. Reiki is given through clothing. Each individual has their own unique experience, but there are some common denominators, warmth or cool breeze coming from the hands of the practitioner and a tingling in the area being touched. A sense of deep relaxation and harmony is often experienced. Reiki is a form of natural healing and does not interfere with any other treatments, therapies or medication. It supports and enhances the positive effects of other treatments whether complimentary or orthodox, and can help in reducing the side effects.

Reiki can be treated on animals.

REIKI HISTORY

Reiki is an ancient healing system that is over 2,000 years old. The knowledge of this method was taught orally and kept hidden behind Sanskrit symbols. It was rediscovered at the end of the nineteenth century by Dr. Mikaeo Usui from Japan, following a life long search on how to heal the mind, body and spirit. Usui learned the ancient Indian language of Sandscript and studied the original Buddhist writings in his quest for healing wisdom. In one of these ancient writings he found the Symbols and Mantras which are the key to the Reiki system of healing. He became charged with the Reiki force through medication and years of searching.

Following his discovery he spent seven years in Kyoto healing the sick: but came to recognise that although he had healed the physical body of it's symptoms, he had not taught a new way of living. This prompted him to set out the Reiki rules for life, which are the Reiki principles.

Reiki gives you the awareness, courage and ability to change what can be changed, and the wisdom to understand and accept what cannot be changed.
